ST HELENS firefighters will be participating in a TravelWise bike ride this Sunday, (September 1), from 2pm.

The ride is part of a scheme to encourage first-time riders and experienced cyclists to embark on a new regime to keep fit and have some fun.

Members of the fire service will also use the day to help launch their new environmentally-friendly travel plan, which begins with a 'Bike to Work Day' being staged today (Thursday, August 29).

The ride, which lasts for between two and three hours, will begin at a leisurely pace from the Pier Head and will take place along the scenic Liverpool-Manchester canal route. Those taking part will not only have the chance to get fit and explore various regional areas, but there will also be the opportunity to socialise with other cyclists.

The TravelWise ride has been organised by the Merseyside Cycling Campaign in conjunction with Healthstart. Its main aim is to encourage people to cycle and use their cars less, which in the process will lead to a reduction in the levels of pollution.

During the ride there will be refreshments available and it is recommended all riders wear a helmet and an adult must accompany under 14s

It is advised that all children under seven years of age use a child seat or trailer.
