SHOWJUMPING and golf are a way of life for the Sargent family.

And incredibly, 20-year-old Rebecca is riding a similar journey to her mother while 16-year-old Philip is following in the footsteps of his father.

Mum Marion competed in the young riders section of the Horse of the Year Show at Wembley in 1972 and Rebecca has qualified for the showpiece event for a second time.

Dad Ken won Haydock Park Golf Club's junior championship and Culcheth High School leaver Philip has done the same.

Marion said: "We all support each other in the showjumping and golf."

She continued: "Rebecca qualified for the Horse of the Year Show at the Ponies UK Championships in Peterborough.

"She will be riding her own horse Gretna Gamble in the open intermediate working hunter class.

"Rebecca has had the horse from a three-year-old and he is now six but will still be one of the youngest to qualify.

"It will be Rebecca's second time in the Horse of the Year Show. She was there in 1997 after qualifying with a smaller pony. She finished fifth."

The difference this time is that the Horse of the Year Show has been moved to Birmingham's NEC Arena for the first time and it will take place in October, a month after Rebecca starts her business degree course at Warrington Collegiate Institute.

Philip's form on the golf course has gone from strength to strength this year, reducing his handicap from 19 to 11.

Marion said: "He has won the Haydock Park Golf Club Junior Championship for the second year running. His dad won that too and they have become the first father and son pairing to have achieved that."

Philip loves golf so much that he will be taking golf and sports studies at Myerscough College in Preston from September.
