PEOPLE of all ages descended to Orford Park to watch and take part in the Asda Westbrook festival of crown green bowls on Monday.

The event, which was organised by Warrington Borough Bowls Club, attracted a large number of new families who were eager to try their hand at bowls.

It also attracted a large number of spectators who were keen to see who would come out on top in the challenge match between the 'Youth of the 70s' and the 'Youth of Today'.

In addition, the town's top junior bowlers were in action in the Asda Westbrook under 16s and under 12s competitions. The standard of play was outstanding and the games in both competitions kept the crowd entertained.

John Harris won the under 16s competition after beating Mathew McGuiness 21-6 in the final.

On his way to the final, John recorded victories over Danny Watson, 21-19 and Lee Bailey while Mathew overcame Ian Ellison, 21-20 and Oliver Ellison, 21-18.

Harriet Ellison triumphed in the under 12s competition, defeating Katie Braide in a high quality finale. The semi-finalists were Nathan Longmore and Luke Richardson.

The town's senior players were also in action before the main event in the Hotter Shoes competition.

Don McIndoe picked up the trophy with a 15-12 victory over Alan Eddie. The beaten semi-finalists were Tom Garaven and Geoff Wightman.

Once the curtain-raisers were done and dusted, the 'Youth of Today' Reflecta Youth side showed what they are made of to win an entertaining challenge match 8-5.

However, the 'Youth of the 70s' side, which reunited the juniors of the 70s for the first time since their glory days in the Warrington Public Parks' League, also played well.
