TWO Warrington women helped England to world championships glory for the third time at the weekend.

Wendy Lythgoe and Helen Dagnall gained first day section wins for the national angling team which casted aside tough opposition from Italy and Germany to lift the title in Slovenia.

Wendy, of Preston Brook, is a member of Warrington Anglers' Association while Thelwall-based Helen competes for Starlets AS on the domestic scene.

The team was managed by Wendy's father Frank, who is secretary of Warrington Anglers' Association.

Another member of the Association, Wendy Locker, of Chester, was also in the squad.

She won an individual gold in the event seven years ago while team gold has previously been won in 1997 and 1999.

This latest success overseas follows on from national titles.

The two Wendys were in the Warrington Gold team which retained the Embassy National Angling Championship Team Trophy in East Retford at the end of last month. Helen took an individual bronze in that same event.

The England success is quite remarkable considering the build-up to the world championships.

A sponsor pulled out of backing England and left them without sufficient funding for flights.

The squad travelled the 1,200 miles over land in a three-ton van before taking part in the world championships on the River Krki at Kostanjevica na Krki.
