ON Thursday, August 15 my wife and I visited St Helens Parish Church in order to attend a funeral.

As the cortege arrived a group of us lined up outside and the vicar met the funeral party in order to give the solemnity such an occasion demands.

Unfortunately, this was somewhat ruined by the noise and distraction coming from a small funfair close to the church entrance.

Apparently, permission for this attraction was granted by St Helens Council. Have none of these councillors got any sense of decency or decorum? I am not against children having their pleasure and such things as this are a good idea - but in the proper place.

A good place would be the town hall square - oh, I forget, decency and decorum is being observed! We cannot have these distractions outside the council chambers, the mayor's parlour or any other such amenities!

May I take it upon myself to give a suggestion that would seem to be suitable to the council's style of thinking? Why not move Parish Church and leave the amusements there?
