Mr James Gerald 'Gerry' Byrne, husband of Mrs Josephine 'Josie' Byrne, died at Warrington Hospital on July 4 after a short illness. He was 81.
Mr Byrne, of Ellen Street, was born in Liverpool and lived in Bewsey for 41 years. He was employed as a state enrolled nurse (SEN) at Warrington Hospital for 21 years, looking after mentally handicapped children, and previously worked at the Patten Arms Hotel for many years.
Mr Byrne first trained as a baker before serving in the Second World War in the Army Catering Corps, and was later attached to the Signals, serving overseas in Japan and India.
In his younger days he was a keen photographer and gardener, and in latter years was an avid Liverpool Football Club supporter, enjoyed word searches and crossword puzzles, and liked watching wildlife programmes on the television.
Mr Byrne leaves his wife and son, to whom he was devoted.
A service was held on July 11 at St Alban's RC Church, prior to interment at Warrington Cemetery. The Rev Father Chris Cunningham officiated.
Arrangements were made by Co-operative Funeral Services, of Bewsey Road.
