Mr Norman Dudgeon, husband of Mrs Doris Dudgeon, died on May 25, aged 92.

Mr Dudgeon, of Crow Lane East, Newton-le-Willows, was born and lived in the Newton locality for the majority of his life.

He was employed as an engineering turner at T&T Vicars for 46 years.

From childhood Mr Dudgeon was a keen bird watcher, and in later life made bird boxes for many friends and relatives.

In his youth he was also a keen cyclist and runner, for which he gained many gold medals.

During the Second World War, Mr Dudgeon was on reserved occupation at Vicars, where he was involved in the manufacture of tank barrels and Lancaster bomber parts.

He loved listening to music, making many tape recordings for his pleasure, and also enjoyed playing bowls.

He was captain of the Newton Cricket, Tennis and Bowling Club, as well as attending many dance evenings there with his wife. In his senior years, he went on to play bowls for Newton Conservative Club, where he was a lifetime member.

Mr and Mrs Dudgeon were married for 64 years, and in recognition of reaching their diamond wedding anniversary, received a telegram from the Queen.

He was devoted to his family and leaves his wife, son, daughter and three grandchildren.

A service was held on May 30 at the United Reformed Church, prior to interment at Newton Cemetery. The Rev Kathy Wilson officiated.

All donations were sent to the Cottage Hospital, Newton.
