TRADING standards officers in Warrington have issued a warning for people to be on their guard following reports of a 'cowboy' damp course company, which may be operating in the area at the moment.
The company usually 'cold calls' homeowners, offering a free damp-proof survey.
This is followed by a call from a 'surveyor' who will identify damp as a problem and give a quote for damp-proofing work to be carried out, often with costs running up to around £1,500.
Although work is done on the properties, it is very often ineffective, unnecessary or both.
