A SHARED passion for dancing led to 50 years of happy marriage for Orford couple Alfred and Mavis Burgess, who celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Friday last week.

Alfred, aged 74, and Mavis, aged 71, met at a dance at Warrington baths in 1948 and they were married four years later at St Barnabas Church.

The couple, of Greenwood Crescent, have two children and four grandchildren.

Over the years, Alfred and Mavis have enjoyed many romantic holidays together, but Mavis' most memorable vacation was their trip to New Zealand. It had been her lifelong ambition to go there, and Alfred took her as a surprise 70th birthday present.

Their hobbies include reading and going for long walks, and they still enjoy going to dance halls, and taking part in ballroom and sequence dances.

Alfred and Mavis celebrated their anniversary with a family dinner in Frodsham, which was arranged by their children and niece, and a weekend break together in Bath and Oxford.

When asked what was the secret behind their long-lasting marriage, Mavis said: "We both share the same sense of humour and we are so ideal for each other."
