COMPETITIVE firms in the north west have pledged their support to trading with the continent at this year's European conference.

North West Means Business was the title of a gathering in Brussels last week where around 150 delegates attended workshops and met MEP's.

Competition, trading in Europe, inward investment and regional European strategy were all topics.

"The conference was not just about discussion and debate and, in the past, significant deals have been made," explained Cllr Derek Boden, leader of the north west regional assembly. "While we would not want to disclose commercially sensitive information, we hope this trend continues."

Peter White, of event sponsors North West Development Agency, added: "The north west led the world in the first industrial revolution and we believe it is now emerging as a leading focus for the second industrial revolution.

"By staging a conference at the heart of Europe, we can engage and influence key members of the EU Commission and raise awareness of the issues that the north west faces."
