Warrington RUFC 18
Southport RUFC 21
SOUTHPORT were handed two points on a plate as Warrington once again let a comfortable lead slip away in a poor second half performance.
Warrington started well with Nick Williams, playing at full back, kicking two difficult penalties. But despite an abundance of possession, Warrington struggled to get through the visitors' stubborn defence.
As the half wore on, Southport gradually began to impose themselves on the game and it was no surprise when their centre went over between the posts after some slack tackling in midfield.
However, it was Warrington who finished the half strongest and they were rewarded with tries by centre Matt Drinkwater and fly half Shaun McDermott, who touched down after winning the race to his own kick.
Not for the first time this season, Warrington's dominance evaporated after the break and the visitors' centre completed his hat-trick with two late tries, both of which were converted.
Warrington entertain Tyldesley in the first round of the Lancashire Trophy at Warrington Sports Club. The game kicks off at 3pm.
