SEVEN young Birchwood Golf Club aces won the most prestigious junior north west tournament of the year on Sunday.

They defeated the cream of Bolton and Lostock Golf Club's young crop of players in a riveting match play final of the Williams BMW Junior Challenge at Lowes Park in Bury after overcoming their hosts in a tough semi-final on the same day.

Birchwood's success represents the second time the club has won the coveted competition. They lifted the trophy in 1991 although the competition was then called the Ian Anthony Challenge.

The competition was renamed for this year.

Birchwood's heroic seven were Matt Everson, Robert Cooper, Matt Ford, James O'Sullivan, Rob Turner, David Pearson and John Littler. The under 18-year-olds had to win four matches to reach Sunday's finals day of the 96-strong competition which began in April.

The golf club is currently looking to recruit more junior members. If anyone would like to join Birchwood's junior ranks they should contact the club on 818819.
