A WIDNES karate kid has been celebrating her success after finishing runner up in a national contest, writes Craig McIntosh.

Kay Jacks, aged 12, just missed out in claiming top place in the SKU National Kata Championships on Sunday, February 9.

The Sts Peter and Paul's School pupil impressed judges to beat nearly 15 fellow fighters in the girls' brown belt, 11- to 12 year olds division at the Birchwood Sports Club, in Warrington.

Kay, who has been training for three years, currently attends the Widnes Shukokai Karate Club, based at Parklands Social Club, led by instructor, Matt Edwards.
