A NORTHWICH man died in an early morning car accident in the town on Tuesday.

The fatal road accident happened on the A533 bypass at Davenham, near the Peckmill roundabout shortly after 6am.

Emergency vehicles sped to the scene of the accident, which involved a red Cavalier saloon car that was in collision with an ERF heavy goods vehicle.

Fire, ambulance and police vehicles were scrambled to the crash but the driver of the car, a 29-year-old Northwich man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two fire crews from Northwich attended the scene and they released the body from the car and then left at 8.20am.

The wagon driver escaped without injury, but was shaken and, as a result, police discharged paramedics from the scene, as they were not required.

As a result of the collision, police diverted traffic away from the scene and a large stretch of the A533 was closed from the busy London Road interchange down to the junction with Jack Lane.

It was reopened later in the day but villagers in Moulton and Davenham were still affected by a substantial increase in traffic, with large trucks clogging up many of the villages' small byways.

The identity of the 29-year-old had not been confirmed when the Guardian went to press but the family had been notified.

Meanwhile, police are appealing for witnesses to the collision and anyone with information about the accident should call the Congleton and Vale Royal traffic unit on 01606 48000.
