TAKING a break from rehearsal for a charity performance of Handel's Messiah in Chester Cathedral, I was unfortunate to have my handbag stolen from the refectory.
I am writing to warn your readers to take care of valuables when visiting this wonderful building. According to the vergers, opportunist crime is rife.
I also wish to pay tribute to the support I received from the cathedral staff, the police, and the credit card response. The efficiency with which they handled the situation was most impressive. Special thanks go to four members of the public who intervened when they saw the culprits throwing 'litter' over the wall, found it to be the handbag and, following information in the diary still inside, traced us to the cathedral.
Even two days later, I have received a visit from a voluntary organisation, the Cheshire Victim Support Scheme, which has been greatly appreciated.
So there are people who care, who go about doing their job quietly and effectively, giving a level of support, which has reinforced my faith in public services.
