FIRE crews are on stand by at Arpley Sidings today, Wednesday, as railway workers tried to separate two tankers containing highly flammable chemicals.
One tanker collided with another during shunting, just after 1am this morning, but when firefighters arrived on the scene there was no leakage from the tankers.
Eight fire engines were back at the scene at lunchtime together with hazardous material units and operational support units.
One of the tankers was carrying ammonium nitrate and the other contained acrylonitrile, which is highly flammable.
A spokesman for operator English, Welsh and Scottish railways said there was no damage to the tankers and the fire brigade was called as a precaution.
The separation of the two tankers is expected to take between three and four hours.
