ACCLAIMED writer Kay Mellor's A Passionate Woman begins its month-long run at Chester's Gateway Theatre this evening.

The charming comedy, which took the West End by storm after its premiere ten years ago, introduces Betty, dressed to the nines and down in the dumps on the morning of her son's wedding.

Dissatisfied with her humdrum life, she escapes into the loft to remember the days of silk stockings, petticoats and dancing to the music of The Platters.

A Passionate Woman is a tale celebrating the part of us that is forever young and was penned before Mellor's huge TV success with Band of Gold, Playing The Field and Fat Friends.

The drama stars Tina Gray as Betty and actors Stephen Crane, Robin Simpson and Peter MacQueen who makes a return to the Chester venue.

The production comes from the creative team behind last year's drama Breaking The Code and is a co-production by the Gateway and the Theatre by the Lake.

Sue Wilson, a former award-winning artistic director of the venue who works extensively with the BBC, directs.
