Trafford MV RUFC 11
Newton RUFC 5
NEWTON were supremely confident of clinching a place in the final of the Lancashire Plate on Saturday but unfortunately Trafford had not read the same script.
The home side made better use of their chances and Newton must now put all of their efforts into winning their league.
Good early pressure from Newton resulted in J. McKenna going close to scoring a try. Second rower Dave Turner had better luck after a great break from C. Pearson.
Newton continued to dominate but the next score came from Trafford when they knocked over a penalty which was awarded for a high tackle.
The visitors then seemed to take their foot off the gas and Trafford had the upper hand for the remainder of the half.
After half-time, Newton took the game to the home side with some good ground gained by the impressive Pearson-Turner.
But the home side edged in front with another penalty goal and with the game firmly in the balance, Trafford were awarded a winning try despite the fact that their winger clearly stepped into touch before putting the ball over the line.
Newton are holding a pre-match buffet on March 15 prior to their game against fellow high-fliers Ruskin Park.
