SWIMATHON organiser Ken Shuttleworth is hoping for a repeat of last year's record-breaker at the 2003 fund-raiser.

The 11 swimathons organised by Congleton Rotary Club have raised a massive £138,000 for numerous charities.

Last year's event broke all previous records, raising £14,649, and hopes are high of repeating the success this year.

The swimathon takes place at Congleton Leisure Centre on February 28 and March 1, and will feature up to 72 teams.

The swimathon will help to provide play equipment and a specialised hospital mattress, as well as supporting East Cheshire Hospice and Rotary charities.

The existing children's play area at Congleton Park is being renewed at a cost of £81,000 as part of the £1.35 million restoration of the park.

Part of the swimathon proceeds will go towards the purchase of a mattress for Macclesfield Hospital.

The mattress in question is effective in preventing pressure sores, and will be used to help make patients' stays in the intensive care unit more comfortable.

"Little did I know when we first started in 1992 we would still be organising such a wonderful event 12 years later," said Mr Shuttleworth.

"At the start I had no idea how much wonderful support we would receive from the people of Congleton and the surrounding area.

"Its success has been down to members of the public, who have worked so hard to obtain sponsorship.

"We have again set a target of £10,000, and are hoping the event will be as successful as last year."
