ALSAGER'S household waste site is earmarked for a major revamp to cater for its increasing use by the public.

The centre is the busiest of the four serving the Congleton district, and the amount of waste it deals with is rising by two per cent a year.

Cheshire County Council is required to increase the range of recycling facilities offered to the public and provide capacity for future growth.

As a result the Alsager site off Hassall Road is due to be improved and extended.

A new site office is to be provided, along with 26 10-metre high lighting columns.

The site is to be extended to the south west to provide land for three more skip bays and an area to leave and store fridges and freezers.

The proposals also include improvements to the existing road access to the site.

The entrance is 40 metres from a sharp bend on the approach from Alsager, which the council said raised road safety concerns, in particular when there were queues.

To reduce queuing problems in Hassall Road and to separate lorries and cars at the exit the current public entrance is to be redesigned into an exit.

In addition the existing commercial vehicle access is to be separated from a new public entrance, to be created in the the current exit.

Four residents are opposing the plans, claiming the extension would bring the site next to a footpath and houses, and would affect their views and quality of life.
