CRIMINALS are to be caught on camera in a high-tech crime-busting initiative in Biddulph.

Eight CCTV cameras have been installed across the town in a bid to deter and catch criminals and reduce fear of crime.

The cameras will relay images to a surveillance centre monitored 24 hours a day by crime detection officers.

The CCTV initiative has cost £180,000, and the cameras will be monitored by Congleton Borough Council at a control centre in Alsager.

"We are delighted the cameras have been put in place, and CCTV has proven itself as being extremely effective in deterring crime," said Insp Helen Jones.

"We have recently had problems with anti-social behaviour and damage in Biddulph town centre, which we have had a great deal of success in dealing with.

"We hope the cameras will be able to offer further help, and will reduce the fear of crime for Biddulph residents and visitors."

Each camera has been situated to have maximum effect in the town.

Three are positioned on the corners of numbers 34, 65 and 84 High Street.

There are cameras at Wharf Road car park and the war memorial in the High Street, and the rear of the town hall in John Street.

The others are situated on the corner of Kingsfield Road and Lawton Street, and the front of English Martyrs Primary School in St John's Road.

Community police officer Sgt Rob Thompson and Cllr Alan Simpson are pictured in the shadow of one of the new cameras.
