COOKING chips can often be dangerous, particularly if you use a deep fat fryer or chip pan on top of your cooker.
But they can be safe if you follow a few guidelines. Here are some handy hints for how to deal with a chip pan fire - but remember to call the fire brigade immediately:
l Never fill a chip pan more than a third full of oil or fat
l Never use a chip pan while under the influence of alcohol
l Tackle the fire only if you feel it is safe to do so and you have a clear escape route
l Never use water on a chip pan as this will cause it to explode into a fireball, spreading the fire
l Never move the pan
l Only if there is no risk to your own personal safety should you try and turn off the heat
l Cover the pan with a lid or a dampened tea towel but protect your hands
l Do not remove the lid or damp tea towel as this can cause the pan to re-ignite
l Leave the pan to cool for at least 30 minutes.
