The Guardian took to the streets to find out your views about the prospect of conflict in Iraq:

Stephen Mather, aged 42, a sales engineer, from Croft, said: "I am against war under any circumstances.

"But for this war in particular I think the majority of the people do not want it and the Government is ignoring what people are saying."

Teacher Vicky Block (right) aged 23, from Daresbury, said: "I do not feel that we know enough about the situation.

"The Government needs to tell us more about what is going on before we can properly make a decision."

Student Andi Edwards (right) aged 19, from Appleton, said: "War with Iraq should definitely not occur - we need more evidence before we go ahead with any plans.

"Tony Blair needs to listen to the public and realise he needs our support.

"If there was sufficient evidence that showed war was the only way then I'd agree, but for the time being war is a definite no."

Joanne Williams, aged 32, a nursery nurse, from Penketh, said: "There would be repercussions that would effect everyone if we went to war.

"I didn't realise that the demonstration in London would be so big.

"I agree with a lot of what was said there and we should have learned from what went on in the first Gulf war because people are still suffering from that."

Husband Lee Williams, aged 34, an HGV driver, said: "I think that people are starting to tell Tony Blair that he has not listened to them. There is a lack of proof at the moment.

"You should only go to war if the consequences of not going are worse than the actions that will be suffered."

Keith Jones, aged 65, from Great Sankey, who was in the Army and is now retired after working for Lever Brothers, said: "I think Tony Blair is an idiot but I think that we have got to go to war.

"I do not want to do it and you never go into war lightly, but I think that it has got to be done."
