A GROWING vermin problem at a popular nature spot in Stockton Heath could be solved following a large-scale rat purge in the village.

Residents have reported that rats appear to be increasing at Ackers Pits and they could increase further with the end of winter approaching.

Pest controllers have suggested using plastic piping, positioned at ground level and covered with grass and filled with poisoned bait.

Contracted teams will be sent out, costing £300, during two separate visits as experts undergo 'an absolute blast' to reduce the health concerns at this well-used angling location.

Clr Alf Pester said: "The rats seem to be increasing and will start breeding soon. It's imperative to sort it out now.

"The trouble is that people throw bread into the water for the swans and the birds but the rats end up eating a lot of it.

"They are a health hazard and their bites carry diseases."
