I HAVE to reply to Steven Broomhead's letter defending the steam train enthusiasts' convention at the Town Hall, and specifically the quote: "Warrington has a long history with the railway network and we were honoured to be chosen for this event."
If Warrington has such a long history with the railway network, surely it would be more beneficial to start updating our stations, as they would appear to have been the same since the aforementioned steam trains were running! In particular, Birchwood station, which does not cater for the disabled, the elderly or parents with prams or pushchairs with its steep steps; Padgate station, which relies on its graffiti and general litter to brighten the place up; Central station, again not catering for those with mobility problems and Bank Quay, which looks like a seventies throwback muggers' paradise!
I am glad that the convention brought business into the town, but I can probably guess that if the visitors came by rail, they won't be returning!
Maybe if the heads of this town put more thought into what the people who LIVE here need NOW, we wouldn't have to keep living in the past, as they seem to delight in doing.
