THREE cheers for community champion Mike Curran who has been recognised for his groundbreaking and inspirational efforts with a prestigious regional award.

But modest Mick, of Lisbon Close, Cinnamon Brow, says he is slightly overawed by the announcement and claims he does not work as an individual but as part of a larger group and that the award should really belong to everyone involved.

Mick, along with a group of committed volunteers, got together and set up the Cinnamon Brow residents' association 16 months ago. He was also instrumental in the long running campaign to help save valued community resource, the Cinnamon Brow Farm Club.

But despite his hard work, Mick could not believe his eyes when he opened the letter from the Government Office for the north west, informing him of its decision.

It read: 'We at the Government Office for the north west would like to formally recognise the important work that you, and other champions in the north west communities, have carried out. To show how much we appreciate your work we would like to present you with a Community Champion Achievers' award.'

He said: "It was a complete surprise but completely overwhelming. I felt a little unsure about accepting it when there are so many other people who work just as hard, if not harder."

Mick will be presented with his award at The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on Friday, March 7.
