AS a regular walker I sympathise with P Savage (Star letters, February 6) when he talks about fly-tipping in our countryside. Together with the litter louts who blight our streets, fly-tippers are the lowest of the low. The real problem, if it is to be assumed that these people are beyond help, is how to keep our countryside and streets clean.

Since it was proclaimed recently by Lords Woolf and Irving that 'first time' burglars should not be sent to prison (even when they may have burgled many times before being caught) but rather they should do hours of work in the service of society could they not be usefully employed in keeping our streets and countryside tidy.

Under supervision of course they could be provided with a bag and a torch and allowed to work at night so the little dears could do a good job and not feel too stressed about being observed.
