PUBLIC involvement in the debate on the proposal of an elected regional assembly is being encouraged by Cheshire County Council

With the deadline for opinions fast approaching, March 3, the county council is strongly urging the public to find out more about the possibility of an elected regional assembly and a referendum on whether the north west wants such a political body.

County council chairman, Bert Grange, commented: "Mr Prescott is seeking our views and has said that the level of public interest is important in helping him decide whether or not a referendum should take place.

"Unfortunately most people have not heard of the Government's proposals or want to know more about what they could mean - that is hwy we are trying to encourage an informed debate."

Details on this subject are now available in Cheshire's 39 libraries and to encourage public involvement the county council has Government documents, information leaflets and response forms available in its main office buildings.

Any decision to have a referendum would trigger another review of Cheshire's local government structure.

Clr Grange added: "If a referendum goes ahead, it could totally change how Cheshire is governed and that will affect us all.

"I urge everyone to visit their local library, find out more about the Government's proposals and make their views known to Mr Prescott by the end of the month."
