Scott Blake, of Mobberley, was killed when his Jaguar XJR left the road and hit a tree.

"It looked as though his car had completely split in two," said one resident who saw the crash scene.

The passenger in the car - a 38-year-old man from Tabley who has not been named - was yesterday (Tuesday) still seriously ill and sedated at Wythenshawe Hospital.

Police closed the A556 at Mere - 150 yards south of the junction with Warrington Road - shortly after the crash at 8.03pm.

It took officers four hours to move the wreckage from the edge of the front garden at Mere Day Nursery and clear the debris from the four-lane carriageway.

It is believed no other cars were involved in the accident.

This week as police appealed for witnesses to the crash, which happened on Tuesday last week, Mr Blake's family paid tribute to a 'bright, cheerful, outgoing, friendly chap'.

His mum Helen, dad Charles and two brothers, Christopher and Thomas, said he had a 'host of good friends and a fantastic girlfriend'.

"He loved Cheshire, Abersoch, sailing, fishing and the sea," they said in a statement released this week. "He had a promising future and will be sorely missed."

Within hours of the crash a website - set up in his memory by friends - had been inundated with messages of condolence.

"Scott's kindness, compassion, humour and generosity have been an enormous inspiration to the ones he left behind," read the tribute on the opening page.

"It is important not to let tragedy happen in vain but to carry on the legacy of the loved ones who have been lost."

His girlfriend, Kate, paid her own tribute this week, describing him as 'the sunshine, the light of every waking moment, his love was all engulfing.'

Witnesses to the crash can call Macclesfield traffic unit on 01244 350000.
