A CONTROVERSIAL new plan to open up Bridge Street to taxis, private hire cars and bicycles was given the green light by the borough council's traffic committee on Monday.

The main objection came from the Warrington Taxi Drivers' Association, which thinks that the proposals are unenforceable as regular drivers will not be able to differentiate private hire cabs from other cars.

Eddie Eves, committee member for the WTDA, said: "We are concerned about enforcement because this initiative will only have value as long as it is not abused. The public will see a normal car going through and think that they can too."

Bob Rimmer, the borough council's strategic director of environment and regeneration, said: "Signs will be provided and if the ordinary motorist sees the sign that does not indicate his vehicle he should not proceed."

The committee voted unanimously to support the action and monitor changes .
