AN optometrist struck off after failing to spot a serious eye condition in a patient has been allowed to return to work.

The General Optical Council accepted yesterday, Wednesday, that Hazel Jean Rosenburgh had undertaken sufficient retraining since the case, involving Dr Ifeanyl Omenaka.

Four separate eye examinations were carried out on Dr Omenaka, who had a family history of glaucoma, by Mrs Rosenburgh, of Dudlow Green Road, Appleton.

Tests were carried out annually between 1995 and 1999. During one examination the patient said his sister had been diagnosed with the eye condition.

Checks were run on the GP but visual field testing was not carried out, Christopher Alder told the council's disciplinary committee.

By early 1999 Dr Omenaka's vision was blurry and in November he was diagnosed as having glaucoma.

As a result Mrs Rosenburgh was struck off the council's register in October 2001.

Timothy Cox, representing Mrs Rosenburgh, said his client had attended glaucoma clinics and studied advances in the field since her last appearance before the committee.

Committee chairman Geraldine Huka, restoring Mrs Rosenburgh's name to the register, said: "We accept you have carried out the necessary retraining and professional development."
