YOUNG people in Winsford are being encouraged to come forward to tackle problems like anti-social behaviour, drug abuse, graffiti and vandalism.

Cheshire Crimebeat wants to see youngsters channel their enthusiasm into setting up their own schemes to improve the town and is willing to fund grants of up to £750 to get projects going.

Crimebeat is the High Sheriff's own charity and has had notable success in introducing over 70 schemes throughout Cheshire - but there are currently no projects running in Winsford.

And with residents' associations calling for a crackdown on anti-social behaviour in Winsford, Crimebeat offers the chance for young people to make a positive contribution to their town.

Crimebeat co-ordinator Frank Harding said: "There are a variety of schemes around Cheshire at the moment and they range from ideas like graffiti clean-ups and refurbishment projects to stopping vandalism.

"Anything that somebody can think of that could make their community a better and safer place is welcome.

"We are quite happy to look at funding citizenship projects too because the classes are starting up in schools now and it's part of a national push.

"Youngsters are encouraged to come up with ideas themselves but they can certainly get guidance from adults who can approach us in the first place."

Winsford mayor Flo Hughes is enthusiastic about potential Crimebeat projects in Winsford.

She said: "Children from all the areas in Winsford can get involved and I think they should at least write off to the organisers and see what it is about.

"Schools can apply, and so can groups like cadets, scouts and youth centres.

"As far as I know there are no schemes like this in Winsford, and it sounds like they really could help."
