POLICE and firefighters waited anxiously for nearly two hours as a woman threatened to jump into the River Mersey after a Valentine's Day night out.
In sub-zero temperatures last Friday, emergency services looked on as the 28-year-old woman perched on a ledge on Warrington Old Bridge. While police stood with her on the bridge, Warrington firefighters launched a rescue boat and were waiting in the Mersey in case she plunged into the icy waters below. An ambulance was also on standby.
A Cheshire Police spokesman confirmed that a 999 call was received just before midnight to the incident at Bridge Foot.
Police officers negotiated with the woman, as her boyfriend is believed to have looked on, until eventually she agreed to return to safety.
She was examined at the scene by paramedics and taken to Warrington Hospital for a check-up, where she was treated for exposure.
