POLICE will be out in force this weekend as they patrol the streets of Warrington to promote a national recruitment drive for more special officers.

Carriers are transporting teams of Special Constables around the town centre as they target the ongoing problem of nuisance youths.

Supt Phil Thompson, Warrington Police's commander, climbed aboard and even Warrington South MP Helen Southworth stepped up to grab a piece of the action.

Newly appointed Cheshire Chief Constable Peter Fahy has overall responsibility for the Special Constabulary nationally, and has hailed their enormous contribution to town policing.

He said: "The aim of the weekend is to encourage members of the public to become members of the Special Constabulary.

"They are involved in a range of different activities and initiatives that demonstrate their capabilities and in particular involvement in local neighbourhood policing."

Laura Sandler, Debbie Yates, Debby Marshall and Laura Elliott were recently recruited to Cheshire's Special Constabulary and have successfully completed training.

Forensic science student Laura Elliott, aged 19, decided to join after a productive work placement at the Warrington division and will bolster teams out in the town centre this weekend.
