SAINTS' long serving centre Paul Newlove has been told he will not be having his contract renewed at the end of the season.

Newlove becomes the second of Saints' old guard to be told that his services will not be required next term - Tommy Martyn was given similar news at the end of last week.

The 31-year-old former Great Britain three-quarter started the season well - and looked keen on securing another 12 month deal at Knowsley Road.

But Saints appear to be looking elsewhere - and are strongly linked with Canterbury Bulldogs' 27-year-old Kiwi international centre Willie Talau.

In 1995 when then chief executive David Howes delivered Newlove to Saints from the back of a Securicor van - he described the record deal as "a calling card signing to show Saints mean business."

And so it has been - Newlove has made an outstanding contribution to Saints' glory years in the summer era, scoring 98 Super League tries.

He holds the record for the most tries in a Super League season - 28 back in the opening 1996 campaign.
