POLICE are hunting for a man who attacked and raped a young woman in Northwich town centre at the weekend.

The 22-year-old woman was walking through the town centre shortly after 2am on Saturday after leaving the Kookaburra nightclub in Winnington when the attack took place.

It is believed she was forced off the road and into the vicinity of the Kwik-Fit garage off Chesterway, where the rape took place.

The victim has been left in a deep state of shock and distress.

Information about the incident is limited as the attack took place in the dark and the woman did not catch sight of her attacker's face.

The only description of the man is that he is white.

As a result, police are urging anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them as they could hold the vital clues that will lead to the rapist being caught.

Det Insp Mike Williams, investigating officer, said: "We are obviously very concerned that an incident like this has taken place in Northwich but we would like to stress that these incidents happen infrequently.

"By the same token, we want to stress that people walking home alone, especially females, should always remain vigilant.

"We appeal to anybody who may assist us in this investigation so we can help this lady put this dreadful ordeal behind her."

Shortly before the attack, the woman - who was wearing a sleeveless blue top, short beige skirt and black shoes - had left the Kookaburra nightclub in Winnington and walked down Winnington Hill.

As she passed Victoria Infirmary, she was stopped and invited to a party - but it is unclear as to whether or not she went along.

She eventually got to the mini-roundabout, where a group of men were stood near to the swing bridge.

Ordeal

She turned right and walked along Castle Street, where a silver car pulled alongside her and slowed down for a moment before driving off.

She continued walking until she turned on to Chesterway, where the attack happened.

After the ordeal, she made her way up to The Volunteer Pub and called friends for help.

Police are particularly keen to speak to the men stood near to the swing bridge, the driver of the silver car and the man who invited her to a party.

Information can be passed on to Det Insp Mike Williams at Northwich CID on 01244 613230 or the control room on 01244 613220.
