AN UNSUNG army of 15,500 carers look after friends and relatives in Halton, it has been claimed - yet only 1,500 are registered as 'care givers'.

The vast majority of people simply do not realise the crucial role they play.

Big-hearted

During National Carers' Week, which runs from June 9 to 15, Halton Council is targeting big-hearted individuals who give up time and energy to look after loved ones.

They have teamed up with various agencies to highlight the services available.

Stands will be on display at Widnes Market and Runcorn's Halton Lea shopping centre, from 10am until 3pm.

Carers will be able to sample free complementary therapy sessions, including reflexology and Indian Head massage, thanks to the Healthy Living Project.

Experts will be on hand to offer advice on welfare benefits, health, childcare and training and plenty of information leaflets will be available.

Cllr Pat Tyrrell, board member for health and social care, said: "If you have any queries about whether you are eligible for the support offered to you by the council and other organisations for carers, this event is ideal for you.

"The council has received money from the Government to inject into care services and wants people to know about the support on offer."

A children's entertainer and brass band will provide entertainment on Saturday.
