RECKLESS vandals are threatening the survival of a century-old rowing club and canoe club.

Yobs have attacked kayakers with missiles as they rowed along the river and have stolen property in a spate of burglaries.

A 66-year-old man, women and children have all been hit by stones hurled by a gang of youths from the river bank.

Specialist equipment has been stolen from Runcorn Rowing Club and Runcorn Canoe Club in Clifton Road.

Stephen Marnell, secretary of Runcorn Canoe Club, said: "Many items were vandalised, stolen or simply dumped in the river. Besides the boat and equipment such as paddles and life jackets, they stole a lawn mower, gas barbecue, CD player and outboard motor.

"The equipment damaged and stolen from the canoe club is too expensive for the club to replace and is not covered by insurance."

Success in regional and national competitions might now be in jeopardy if the clubs are forced to close.

Mr Marnell, said: "It has taken many years of hard work to raise the funds to buy the equipment. This incident will only serve to diminish the services available to Halton residents and dampen the enthusiasm of the volunteers who work hard to provide the facilities."

Anyone with information about the thefts or stolen equipment can contact Runcorn police.
