say hello?

SHOULD he stay or should he go?

That is the burning debate among Warrington Wolves fans at the moment over the future of the Brian Bevan statue that stands proudly near to the Wilderspool ground.

And with the club set to move over to the new Winwick Road stadium in time for next season, attention is turning to what will happen to the homage to the club's favourite son.

The debate has been raging on the terraces for months but now borough council finance boss Clr Paul Kenny has joined in the discussions by asking Town Hall bosses to draw up costings for moving the statue across town to the new stadium.

He said: "I know from standing on the Fletcher End that many of the fans would support the Bevan statue being permanently sited next to the new stadium.

"The council has provided support both financial and in kind and I know that the vast majority of council members, of all political persuasions, support the club 100 per cent."

His views echo those of Warrington coach Paul Cullen who last week said the statue should be moved and speaking this week, club chief executive Andy Gatcliffe said the fans appear to be behind the change.

"From a personal point of view I would like to see the statue in a prime location right outside the new ground," he said.

"If the area around Wilderspool is redeveloped the statue would be lost.

"It belongs to the community and they should decide what happens."

Bevan still holds the world record for tries by a rugby league player with more than 700 in his 600 plus games for the club.
