WARRINGTON'S executive board says that the council remains committed to finding a new town centre pool.

The 10-member panel decided to close the baths on July 31 after hearing that keeping it open would cost more than £600,000 next year with more than £2.5 million needed to bring it up to standard.

Clr Colin Froggatt, executive member for social services and health, said it was a 'sad occasion', but the council had no other choice. He said: "It was always the intention of this council to try to keep Warrington Baths going until we found a potential developer to give us a replacement."

The meeting heard that 25 per cent of current pool time could not be accommodated at the other leisure centres across the borough, but that discussions were under way to try to fit in all the current users .
