It was standing room only at the meeting at Bexton Court on June 4.

Many came expecting a discussion on the future of the day care centre and respite ward but found all the decisions had already been taken by Cheshire County Council.

The meeting broke up with many dissatisfied by plans for the future of Bexton Court.

East Cheshire area, that is the borough and Congleton, does not have a centre for care of dementia sufferers and Bexton is considered to be the best option for this as no money is available for building a centre. It is not ideal as £100,000 will be spent on structural work.

The 50 plus elderly day care clients will be shunted out to three local centres.

The Red Cross, formerly Cottage Hospital, could only take a few, St John's Wood Community Centre currently operates on Tuesdays and Fridays, and on Mondays with Age Concern volunteers, these are small groups and there is another group in a Mobberley church hall.

Does this sound like a good substitution for the purpose-built, professionally staffed, Bexton Court, which has a range of facilities? They are already distressed at the prospect of losing this familiar centre and will be further upset by building work around them if this plan goes forward.

The local elderly people who are sustained by care and social contact can be kept only at home or with families if this support is provided.

There is also the loss of respite care at Bexton.

Surely Knutsford Town Council will not allow this unsatisfactory plan to proceed?
