The Dandy Warhols

Soundtracking a Vodaphone commercial might have revived the fleeting moment of glory for Middleton's 'Mock Turtles' but, for The Dandy Warhols, the exposure merely served to cloud their already fuzzy image.

Nevertheless, in the wake of that advert, one might have expected Welcome to the Monkey House to be enhanced by the fine tuning of modern technology and it is something of a paradox to discover a record that sounds as if it was recorded in a canal on a damp Tuesday in Wigan in 1971. Vocalist Courtney Taylor-Taylor has still to recover from his charisma bypass operation and allows his voice to remain locked in whispery introversion.

Although there are high spots - I Am Sound and The Dandy Warhols Love Almost Everyone among them - it remains curiously free of colourful pop sensibility. All the more surprising given that Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes has grabbed a co-producer's credit.

Surprisingly drab although their recent live shows, despite being over-long, hinted that a more intriguing direction might yet emerge. Mick Middles
