THE Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) is warning people in Halton to be aware of the symptoms of the blood poisoning disease this summer.

Although fewer cases of meningitis and septicaemia were recorded in 2002, they did not go away completely. The illnesses can leave babies, older children and adults fighting for their lives.

Chief executive of MRF, Denise Vaughan, said: "The charity believes research holds the key to its vision of a world free from meningitis and septicaemia.

"Until there are vaccines that can prevent all forms of the diseases, knowing the symptoms is vital as early diagnosis offers the best chance for a good recovery."
