WITH respect to the strong opinion of Mr Oldacre, of Padgate, that the Euro flag flown over Warrington Town Hall recently could in any way be disloyal to this country is in my own view a statement that contradicts historical facts.

If we look into the streets, what a medley of neighbourhoods we see.

The name 'Angle Land' itself denotes controversy deriving from a Germanic province, together with the Saxons and Jutes, a land south of Schleswig along the river Elbe.

The pirates and bully boys of north west Germany we could have well done without. Not to mention the Romans before them, AD43-410, a lot more than just an impact they made. Throw in a continuous raid of Vikings, then a Norman conquest, together with football's favourite symbol, our national flag, which was in point of fact Queen Eleanor's own property-the banner of Aquitaine- a red cross on a white field.

Eleanor was the divorced wife of Louis VII of France.

The armorial insignia, three lions that our sportsmen and women love to bear, came along with Eleanor's second husband Henry II Plantagenet - yes, you guessed it, French again. And was not our own patron saint - George the dragon slayer - a myth of Turkish origin?

Now what of the present times?

For the last 300 years our heads of state and religion, give or take a slight name change (to save embarrassment), have been in the monopoly of two German families - the Houses of Hanover and Saxe-Coburg- Gotha.

Where in our turbulent history, may I ask, were we not ruled by Europeans from beyond our shores?

For even the Town Hall's central facade, above whose portals the dreaded flag flew, was I am sorry to say, influenced by the Italian architect Andrea Palladio.

Tell me, Mr Oldacre, whose rag should we wave? Maybe for once we the British people should tell the truth and honour our true rulers, and fly the Stars and Stripes of America, and be well pleased with that.
