A WOMAN from Bewsey has been nominated for a national adult education award and she says it's all thanks to her 'brilliant' teacher.
Muriel Harrop, aged 55, from Southworth Avenue, has been nominated for the Open College North West Adult Learner of the Year Award. She was singled-out by her Priestley College tutor, Glennis Hassall, because of the excellent progress she has made in maths and English.
Glennis said: "She's very modest about her achievement but she's done really well and grown in confidence."
Muriel commented: "I'm made up with it because when I was at school I was hopeless. I just wish I'd had Glennis as a teacher then, she's brilliant. I'm getting more confident and I can even do maths that my daughters don't know how to do!"
Muriel, who has been a widow for 10 years, decided to start doing the courses when her daughters left school and started work. She concluded: "I thought I should just give it a go. It gets me out - I'm never in the house now! I just wish my husband was here so I could tell him about it."
Priestley College will be starting new five-week taster courses at Longshaw Street and Bewsey Lodge Community Centres this month. Call 633591 for details.
