THE town's premier young soccer talent took to the pitch for a charity kickabout to raise money for St Rocco's Hospice and honour a prominent figure in junior football.
Alf Holt has been involved with junior football in Warrington for 30 years as manager of Sankey Rangers Football Club, joint manager of the league's representative under 12 team, secretary and fixture secretary of the league and as a much-respected and sought-after referee.
Sadly, shortly after retiring in 1997, Alf was diagnosed with motor neurone disease.
But despite his deteriorating health he continued as secretary and fixture secretary up until the end of last season.
In 1998 Alf won the prestigious Warrington Guardian Sports Personality special award.
The Warrington junior Solvay football league held a charity competition last week between Fife Rangers and Wigan Junior Latics at Victoria Park.
Winning team Fife Rangers was presented with its trophies by Alf's wife Val, and all money raised, so far totalling £1,500, will be presented to St Rocco's Hospice where Alf is a patient.
