ONLY two athletes represented Warrington Athletics Club's men's team in the second round of the North of England Track and Field League and they were making their debuts.

They both made an impact on the Division Four West match at Lancaster but more athletes will need to turn out in the remaining two matches if the team is to avoid relegation.

Team manager Jim Russell said: "The weekend's date was an unfortunate one for us. We have a young team and a lot of our under 17s and u20s athletes are still at school and are currently busy revising for exams.

"There were a variety of reasons for our senior athletes not being available, such as injuries, work commitments and holidays.

"If we can put a good team out for the remaining two matches I think we can stay up. With a full strength side I think we would win each of the matches but it is up to the athletes to turn out."

The third round will take place at Wavertree on July 5 and the final round will be at Victoria Park, Warrington, on August 3.

Jonathon Collins ran the 400 metres at Lancaster and led until the final few metres when three runners passed him. His time was 57.3 secs, only 0.8 seconds behind the winner.

Dominic Mahon was in third place in a 5,000m race which was run in cojunction with the Division Three West match until the final 500 metres when he was passed by two runners.

He eventually finished in fifth place in the race, but second place in the division race in 17mins 2.1secs.

Dominic also took part in the long jump finishing in forth place with 4.13m.
