A SUPERMARKET used to competing against the big boys has enjoyed a year of steady growth since being named the Guardian's Business of the Year 2002 - and management is hatching plans to ensure the firm's future success.

Family-owned Culcheth Provisions Store clinched the Retailer of the Year and the overall prize at last year's glittering ceremony at the Hanover International.

It was a testament to decades of endeavour by staff at CPS, which moved to the village from Leigh in 1964 and has gradually expanded into an enterprise which attracts thousands from across north Warrington and beyond.

And with managing director Stuart Nelson in detailed negotiations about adding another store, to complement their Common Lane branch, that trend looks set to continue.

He told the Guardian that he was involved in negotiations over a couple of potential sites for stores, which are still being kept under wraps.

Looking back on the 2002 triumph, Mr Nelson added: "It was very pleasing for all the people who work for the company, to be recognised externally in that way.

"We hope to be able to continue to grow and develop our business on this site - and at another location as well."

Mr Nelson is the third generation of his family to run the store, which started its trading life in Leigh in 1939 and now has a 100-strong workforce.

Judges were impressed by the store's customer service policy - knowing most of their regulars by their first names - and their extensive range of grocery and fresh produce lines.
