CAMPAIGNING to save the Culcheth branch of the Lloyds TSB from closure has reached the House of Commons.

An Early Day Motion has been tabled by Warrington North MP Helen Jones condemning the decision by bank bosses to axe the Warrington Road branch, despite it still remaining profitable.

In part it says that the House "...believes that the reasons given by the bank for the closure do not stand up to close scrutiny; notes that the proposed closure will deny access to banking services to many of the bank's loyal customers in the village, and calls on the company to reconsider."

Later Mrs Jones said: "People deserve more consideration for their loyal custom than has so far been shown to them."

The MP has called on the bank to at least delay the closure, given the strength of feeling generated by the announcement, so the situation can be reviewed.

Bank chiefs say safety fears for customers and workers, following an armed raid in February, have forced the decision upon them.

In response a campaign group, led by Peter Caswell, has been formed which is lobbying Lloyds TSB managers at regional and national level.
