GRAPPENHALL and Thelwall Parish Council has agreed to come to the aid of Grappenhall Sports Club by providing a £3,000 grant to improve the deteriorating sports grounds.

The cash has been agreed in the short term and will prove vital in keeping some of the only sports fields in the area running successfully.

The investment will provide maintenance for the grounds which have suffered over recent months due to a lack of proper care because of the dilapidated condition of the clubhouse.

Parish council clerk Damian Boddy said: "In the immediate future we want to allow the junior footballers to play in September so we have agreed to pay the £3,000.

"We think it is particularly important that the younger people should be supported.

"In the longer term we have agreed to have discussions with the club about the future and how the fields might be kept."

The grounds were officially purchased last year with funds from the National Lottery, public subscription and some £5,600 from the parish council.
